Job 11: Can you fathom the mystery of God?
Read Job 11:1-20 before you meet.
In a few lines
Zophar's words about God, "high as heaven" and "deeper than Sheol" (11:8), are the kind other Scripture says of God too (Psalm 145:3). But he said them to a man the LORD had called "blameless" (1:8), with "God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves" (11:6).
The verse to carry
“Can you fathom the mystery of God? Or can you probe the limits of the Almighty?”
Job 11:7
To talk about
1. Zophar told a grieving man, "God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves" (11:6). When someone you know is suffering, why is it so tempting to explain their pain, and what can an explanation do to them?
2. "Can you fathom the mystery of God?" (11:7). Where in your life have you had to keep trusting God without understanding what he was doing?
3. "If you set your heart aright, stretch out your hands toward him" (11:13) is the kind of thing other Scripture says too, but Zophar said it to a man the book calls "blameless and upright" (1:1). How do you tell whether true words fit the person in front of you?
