Isaiah 64: We are the clay

Read Isaiah 64:1-12 before you meet.

In a few lines

In Hebrew 64:1 and 64:3 end with the same four words: the prayer asks the LORD to come down just as it remembers him coming down. In Hebrew its "a God besides you" (64:4) has the same two words as David's prayer (2 Samuel 7:22), and Paul gives as Scripture words that share some of 64:4's (1 Corinthians 2:9). And every leaf in Isaiah fades.

The verse to carry

“But now, LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay and you our potter. We all are the work of your hand.”

Isaiah 64:8

To talk about

  1. 1. The prayer asks, "Oh that you would tear the heavens, that you would come down" (64:1). What would it look like for you to pray as boldly as this?

  2. 2. "But now, LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay and you our potter" (64:8). What does it add to call God both Father and potter in one breath?

  3. 3. The chapter ends with a question it leaves open (64:12). How can a group make room for prayers that end with a question?
