Isaiah 63: You are our Father

Read Isaiah 63:1-19 before you meet.

In a few lines

Isaiah 63:10-11 has two of the Hebrew Bible's three verses with Holy Spirit; the third is Psalm 51:11. The prayer that begins at 63:7 calls the LORD our Father twice in one verse (63:16), and the WEB has our Redeemer only there and in 47:4.

The verse to carry

“In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and in his pity he redeemed them. He bore them, and carried them all the days of old.”

Isaiah 63:9

To talk about

  1. 1. "I will tell of the loving kindnesses of the LORD … according to all that the LORD has given to us" (63:7). What is one kindness of God you could tell of this week?

  2. 2. "In all their affliction he was afflicted" (63:9). What does it say to you that the prayer remembers God this way?

  3. 3. The prayer asks the LORD hard questions (63:15, 63:17) and in the same breath says, "You, LORD, are our Father" (63:16). What helps you bring hard questions to God in prayer?
