Isaiah 61: Good news to the humble
Read Isaiah 61:1-11 before you meet.
In a few lines
When Jesus read Isaiah 61 in Nazareth, the words Luke gives end at "the acceptable year of the Lord" (Luke 4:19), before "the day of vengeance of our God" (Isaiah 61:2). And in Hebrew the bridegroom who "decks himself" (Isaiah 61:10) does it with a priest's verb, the verb of "minister to me in the priest’s office" (Exodus 28:1).
The verse to carry
“The Lord GOD’s Spirit is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound,”
Isaiah 61:1
To talk about
1. The one sent in 61:1 goes to the humble, the broken hearted, the captives and those who are bound. Has good news about God ever reached you when you needed it most? What was it like?
2. "a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness" (61:3). Which of these three would you most want to receive this week, and why?
3. Jesus said, "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing" (Luke 4:21). How does that *today* change the way you read Isaiah 61?
