Isaiah 56: A house of prayer for all peoples
Read Isaiah 56:1-12 before you meet.
In a few lines
Jesus gave Isaiah 56:7 in the temple, and of the three Gospels that tell it, only Mark has "for all" (Mark 11:17). In 56:1 what is right and my righteousness are one Hebrew word, tsedaqah. And the eunuch's "memorial and a name" (56:5) is yad vashem: memorial is the word for hand.
The verse to carry
“I will bring these to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”
Isaiah 56:7
To talk about
1. The foreigner might say, "The LORD will surely separate me from his people" (56:3). What helps someone who feels on the outside to know they are welcome among God's people?
2. Jesus asked in the temple, "Isn’t it written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’?" (Mark 11:17). What does it mean to you that the LORD calls his house a house of prayer?
3. "Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is near" (56:1). How might knowing that the LORD's salvation is near shape what you do this week?
