Isaiah 54: Sing, barren
Read Isaiah 54:1-17 before you meet.
In a few lines
Isaiah has the Hebrew word for barren only once, to open chapter 54, and the woman "who didn’t give birth" is told to enlarge her tent (54:1-2). The LORD calls his forsaking "a small moment" and his loving kindness "everlasting" (54:7-8), and swears it as he swore of Noah's waters (54:9). Jesus said, "They will all be taught by God" (John 6:45).
The verse to carry
“For the mountains may depart, and the hills be removed, but my loving kindness will not depart from you, and my covenant of peace will not be removed,” says the LORD who has mercy on you.”
Isaiah 54:10
To talk about
1. "For a small moment I have forsaken you" (54:7), "but with everlasting loving kindness I will have mercy on you" (54:8). What does it tell you about the LORD that he speaks of his wrath as a moment and his loving kindness as everlasting?
2. "Enlarge the place of your tent" (54:2). What would it look like for your group to make room for someone new?
3. "All your children will be taught by the LORD" (54:13), and Jesus said, "They will all be taught by God" (John 6:45). What have you learned from this chapter that you want to carry into the week?
