Isaiah 51: Awake, awake

Read Isaiah 51:1-23 before you meet.

In a few lines

The chapter calls "Listen to me" three times, then "Awake, awake": first to the LORD's own arm (51:9), then to Jerusalem (51:17), and the next chapter says it to Zion (52:1). The cup of wrath Jerusalem drank from the LORD's hand is taken out of her hand (51:22). And in Hebrew the rock they were cut from (51:1) and Rahab cut in pieces (51:9) share one verb.

The verse to carry

“I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you, that you are afraid of man who shall die, and of the son of man who will be made as grass?”

Isaiah 51:12

To talk about

  1. 1. "for when he was but one I called him, I blessed him, and made him many" (51:2). Where have you seen God make much of something that started small?

  2. 2. "Don’t fear the reproach of men, and don’t be dismayed at their insults" (51:7). What kind of reproach is hardest for you to hear, and which words of 51:7-13 would you want to hold on to when you hear it?

  3. 3. "Behold, I have taken out of your hand the cup of staggering" (51:22). What would it mean to you to hear that said about something heavy you have carried?
