Isaiah 49: A light to the nations
Read Isaiah 49:1-26 before you meet.
In a few lines
The servant of 49:1-6 is named "Israel" (49:3), sent to bring Jacob back (49:5) and given "as a light to the nations" (49:6), and Christians read who he is in more than one way. And to Zion's "the Lord has forgotten me" (49:14) the LORD says, "these may forget, yet I will not forget you!" (49:15).
The verse to carry
“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you!”
Isaiah 49:15
To talk about
1. "I have labored in vain … yet surely the justice due to me is with the LORD" (49:4). When has work you did seemed to come to nothing, and what would it look like to leave it with God, as the servant does?
2. Zion says, "the Lord has forgotten me" (49:14), and the LORD answers, "I will not forget you!" (49:15). What does it mean to you that he answers her complaint this way?
3. Zion says, "Behold, I was left alone" (49:21), and is told, "Lift up your eyes all around, and see" (49:18). When has someone helped you see that you weren't as alone as you felt?
