Isaiah 44: I am the first, and I am the last
Read Isaiah 44:1-28 before you meet.
In a few lines
In Hebrew the verb of the LORD who "formed you from the womb" (44:2) is the verb of "Everyone who makes a carved image" (44:9). And the man makes his god from "the rest" of the wood he burns (44:17): she'erit, the word the WEB gives elsewhere in Isaiah as remnant.
The verse to carry
“I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions, and, as a cloud, your sins. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.”
Isaiah 44:22
To talk about
1. "Israel, you will not be forgotten by me" (44:21). When has it mattered to you to be remembered, and what do these words say to you?
2. The same tree warms the man, bakes his bread, and becomes his god (44:15-17). Why do you think people come to trust in things their own hands have made?
3. 44:22 says "I have blotted out" and "I have redeemed you" on either side of the call, "Return to me". What difference does it make to hear the call in that order?
