Isaiah 42: Behold, my servant

Read Isaiah 42:1-25 before you meet.

In a few lines

Matthew gives Isaiah 42:1-4 of Jesus, who withdrew, healed the crowds and told them not to make him known (Matthew 12:15-17). The servant won't break a bruised reed (42:3), and in Hebrew 42:4's "He will not fail nor be discouraged" has the bruised reed's verb and the verb Strong's gives behind the dim wick. And justice comes three times in four verses.

The verse to carry

“He won’t break a bruised reed. He won’t quench a dimly burning wick. He will faithfully bring justice.”

Isaiah 42:3

To talk about

  1. 1. "He won’t break a bruised reed. He won’t quench a dimly burning wick" (42:3). When has someone's gentleness helped you when you were close to giving up?

  2. 2. "I will bring the blind by a way that they don’t know" (42:16). Where are you walking a way you don't know yet, and what would it mean to be led on it?

  3. 3. Matthew found Isaiah's words in Jesus healing the crowds and telling them not to make him known (Matthew 12:15-17). What strikes you about a servant who "will not shout, nor raise his voice" (42:2)?
