Isaiah 40: Comfort, comfort my people
Read Isaiah 40:1-31 before you meet.
In a few lines
Isaiah 40 uses the same two Hebrew verbs three times: the LORD "doesn’t faint. He isn’t weary" (40:28), "the youths faint and get weary" (40:30), and those who wait for the LORD "will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint" (40:31). In between: "He gives power to the weak" (40:29).
The verse to carry
“but those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:31
To talk about
1. "Speak comfortably to Jerusalem" (40:2). When have someone's words comforted you, and what made them reach you?
2. "My way is hidden from the LORD" (40:27). When have you felt like that, and which words of 40:28-31 would you most want to hear then?
3. "The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God stands forever" (40:8). What helps you hold on to what lasts when so much around you fades?
