Isaiah 38: The living, the living

Read Isaiah 38:1-22 before you meet.

In a few lines

The LORD's first word said Hezekiah would "not live" (38:1), and the same Hebrew verb comes back four more times in the chapter, for his recovery and his song: "You restore me, and cause me to live" (38:16). And the verb of Rabshakeh's "make a pledge" (36:8) is in Hezekiah's plea to the Lord: "Be my security" (38:14).

The verse to carry

“The living, the living, he shall praise you, as I do today. The father shall make known your truth to the children.”

Isaiah 38:19

To talk about

  1. 1. "I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears" (38:5). What difference does it make to you that God sees tears as well as hears words?

  2. 2. After he recovered, Hezekiah wrote, "I will walk carefully all my years because of the anguish of my soul" (38:15). Think of a hard time you came through: how did it change the way you lived afterwards?

  3. 3. "The father shall make known your truth to the children" (38:19). Who first made God's faithfulness known to you, and who might you pass it on to?
