Isaiah 37: Against the Holy One of Israel

Read Isaiah 37:1-38 before you meet.

In a few lines

In his answer to Sennacherib the LORD names himself "the Holy One of Israel" (37:23), Isaiah's own name for the LORD, and its only use in chapters 36-39. And where 2 Kings says the king defied the Lord "By your messengers" (2 Kings 19:23), Isaiah says "By your servants" (37:24).

The verse to carry

“LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, who is enthroned among the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.”

Isaiah 37:16

To talk about

  1. 1. Hezekiah sent to Isaiah, "lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left" (37:4). Who could you ask to pray with you or for you about something that weighs on you this week?

  2. 2. The messengers said, "Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you" (37:10). When you hear words like these, that trusting God won't help, what in this chapter answers them?

  3. 3. Hezekiah asked to be saved "that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are the LORD, even you only" (37:20). When you bring a hard thing to God, what would it look like to ask first that he be known in it?
