Isaiah 34: Rolled up like a scroll
Read Isaiah 34:1-17 before you meet.
In a few lines
The scroll the sky is rolled up like (34:4) and "the book of the LORD" (34:16) are one Hebrew word, sefer. The confusion and emptiness of 34:11 are tohu and bohu, the "formless and empty" of Genesis 1:2. And the emptied land is shared out by lot and measuring line, to the pelican and the porcupine (34:11, 34:17).
The verse to carry
“Search in the book of the LORD, and read: not one of these will be missing. None will lack her mate. For my mouth has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them.”
Isaiah 34:16
To talk about
1. "Search in the book of the LORD, and read" (34:16). What helps you search the Bible, and not only read past it?
2. The chapter ends with creatures, each with her mate, and says, "not one of these will be missing" and "his Spirit has gathered them" (34:16). What does it say to you that not one of them is left out?
3. "The sky will be rolled up like a scroll" (34:4). What in your life seems as lasting as the sky, and how does this verse change the way you see it?
