Isaiah 29: Woe to Ariel

Read Isaiah 29:1-24 before you meet.

In a few lines

Isaiah 29 uses David's verb for the siege: "the city where David encamped" (29:1), then "I will encamp against you" (29:3). No one could read the sealed book (29:11-12), and "In that day, the deaf will hear the words of the book" (29:18). And Jesus gave 29:13's words to the Pharisees and scribes: "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you" (Matthew 15:7).

The verse to carry

“The Lord said, “Because this people draws near with their mouth and honors me with their lips, but they have removed their heart far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment of men which has been taught;”

Isaiah 29:13

To talk about

  1. 1. "this people draws near with their mouth and honors me with their lips, but they have removed their heart far from me" (29:13). When is it easiest for your words about God to run ahead of your heart?

  2. 2. "I can’t, for it is sealed" (29:11). Which part of the Bible has felt closed to you, and what has helped open it?

  3. 3. "They also who err in spirit will come to understanding, and those who grumble will receive instruction" (29:24). What difference does it make that the chapter ends with a promise for those who err and grumble?
