Isaiah 22: The valley of vision
Read Isaiah 22:1-25 before you meet.
In a few lines
The chapter opens and closes with burden, one Hebrew spelling with two meanings: an oracle (22:1) and a load (22:25). The city looked to the armor (22:8) but didn't look to "him who had done this" (22:11): one Hebrew verb. And Eliakim's key (22:22) is a word the Hebrew Bible has only twice.
The verse to carry
“You also made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you didn’t look to him who had done this, neither did you have respect for him who planned it long ago.”
Isaiah 22:11
To talk about
1. They looked "to the armor" (22:8) but "didn’t look to him who had done this" (22:11). When trouble comes, what do you look to first, and what would it mean to look to him?
2. The Lord called to weeping, and the city feasted (22:12-13). What helps you take a hard word from God seriously instead of shrugging it off?
3. Shebna cut "a tomb on high" for himself (22:16); Eliakim was to be "a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem" (22:21). Where have you been given a place you could use for others rather than for yourself?
