Isaiah 13: The burden of Babylon
Read Isaiah 13:1-22 before you meet.
In a few lines
The burden of 13:1 is massa', which Brown-Driver-Briggs gives here as "utterance, oracle". "It will come as destruction from the Almighty" (13:6) is word for word in Joel 1:15. And the chapter's gazelle (13:14) and Babylon's glory (13:19) are one Hebrew spelling, tsevi.
The verse to carry
“I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity. I will cause the arrogance of the proud to cease, and will humble the arrogance of the terrible.”
Isaiah 13:11
To talk about
1. "I will cause the arrogance of the proud to cease" (13:11). Where do you notice pride most easily in yourself, and what helps you see it?
2. The chapter speaks of a day when the LORD will "punish the world for their evil" (13:11). How does knowing that God will judge evil change the way you live, or pray, now?
3. Chapters like this one are hard to read. What helps you keep reading the Bible's hardest pages, and what do you do with what you find there?
