Isaiah 11: A shoot from the stock of Jesse
Read Isaiah 11:1-16 before you meet.
In a few lines
Isaiah names Jesse only twice, both here. A branch grows "out of his roots" (11:1), Jesse's, and the one the nations will seek is "the root of Jesse" (11:10): in Hebrew roots and root are the same word. Paul writes that "Christ has been made a servant of the circumcision for the truth of God" (Romans 15:8), and a few verses later gives the words of 11:10 (Romans 15:12).
The verse to carry
“They will not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.”
Isaiah 11:9
To talk about
1. Isaiah 10 ends with a forest cut down, and 11:1 opens with a shoot from a stock. Where have you seen God bring something living out of what looked cut down?
2. "He will not judge by the sight of his eyes, neither decide by the hearing of his ears" (11:3). Where are you most tempted to judge by what you first see or hear?
3. "They will not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain" (11:9). What does that picture stir in you, and how might it shape the way you treat people this week?
