Hebrews 5: Called by God
Read Hebrews 5:1-14 before you meet.
In a few lines
In Hebrews 5, the author of "the author of eternal salvation" (5:9) is a different Greek word from the author of 2:10; Acts has it as cause (Acts 19:40). And the word behind dull in "dull of hearing" (5:11) comes back as sluggish in 6:12: the New Testament has it only in those two verses.
The verse to carry
“But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.”
Hebrews 5:14
To talk about
1. "having offered up prayers and petitions with strong crying and tears" (5:7). What do you make of the letter telling of prayers like these?
2. "About him we have many words to say, and hard to interpret" (5:11). What do you make of the letter saying this about what it has to say?
3. "who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil" (5:14). What do you think the letter's picture of senses exercised by use is getting at?
