Hebrews 1: The radiance of his glory

Read Hebrews 1:1-14 before you meet.

In a few lines

Hebrews opens with God, who spoke "at many times and in various ways" (1:1) and "has at the end of these days spoken to us by his Son" (1:2). The Greek words behind radiance and very image in 1:3 are found nowhere else in the New Testament, and the seven sayings of 1:5-13 come with no source named.

The verse to carry

“His Son is the radiance of his glory, the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, who, when he had by himself purified us of our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high,”

Hebrews 1:3

To talk about

  1. 1. "God, having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways" (1:1). When you read the Bible, what helps you listen for what God is saying?

  2. 2. "His Son is the radiance of his glory" (1:3). Which words of 1:3 would you most like to talk over together, and why?

  3. 3. "but you are the same. Your years won’t fail." (1:12). When much around you is changing, what do these words give you?
