Genesis 44: Instead of the boy

Read Genesis 44:1-34 before you meet.

In a few lines

Joseph hid his silver cup in Benjamin's sack and offered to let the others go home. Instead they tore their clothes and returned, and Judah said, "God has found out the iniquity of your servants." Judah, who once said "let’s sell him", asked to stay as a slave "instead of the boy", the word used of the ram offered instead of Isaac.

The verse to carry

“Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, my lord’s slave; and let the boy go up with his brothers.”

Genesis 44:33

To talk about

  1. 1. Judah once proposed selling his brother; now he offers himself for his brother. What do you think changed him?

  2. 2. Judah said, "God has found out the iniquity of your servants," though they hadn't taken the cup. Why might he have said that?

  3. 3. Judah's offer put his own freedom in place of his brother's. What does that kind of love look like in your family or church?
