Genesis 37: Joseph and his brothers
Read Genesis 37:1-36 before you meet.
In a few lines
Jacob loved Joseph more than his other sons and gave him a special tunic, and Joseph's dreams set his brothers against him. They threw him in a pit, he was sold to traders bound for Egypt, and they deceived their father with his tunic dipped in goat's blood, as Jacob once deceived his own father with goats. Jacob said he would go down to Sheol mourning, the Bible's first use of the word.
The verse to carry
“His brothers envied him, but his father kept this saying in mind.”
Genesis 37:11
To talk about
1. Isaac favored Esau, Rebekah favored Jacob, and now Jacob favors Joseph. How do patterns like this pass down in families, and how can they be broken?
2. The brothers sat down to eat while Joseph was in the pit. What does it take for people to become that hardened?
3. Joseph's dreams seemed to end in a pit, yet years later his brothers bowed down to him (42:6, 9). When has something you trusted God for seemed to reach a dead end?
