Genesis 35: Back to Bethel

Read Genesis 35:1-29 before you meet.

In a few lines

Jacob's household put away their foreign gods and went back to Bethel, where God confirmed the name Israel and the promise: "Be fruitful and multiply… kings will come out of your body." Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin on the way to Bethlehem; she called him son of my sorrow, and Jacob son of the right hand. Now Jacob had twelve sons, and he and Esau buried their father.

The verse to carry

“Let’s arise, and go up to Bethel. I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me on the way which I went.”

Genesis 35:3

To talk about

  1. 1. Before going up to Bethel, Jacob's household put away their foreign gods. What might you need to put away as you come back to God?

  2. 2. Rachel called her son "son of my sorrow"; Jacob called him "son of the right hand." How do grief and hope sit together in your life?

  3. 3. Jacob described God as the one "who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me on the way which I went." How would you describe God's part in your story so far?
