Genesis 32: Face to face

Read Genesis 32:1-32 before you meet.

In a few lines

Afraid of Esau, Jacob split his camp, sent gifts ahead and prayed God's promises back to him: "I am not worthy." Alone at the Jabbok he wrestled a man till dawn and would not let go without a blessing. Asked his name, he said "Jacob" this time, and was renamed Israel. He named the place Peniel, "I have seen God face to face", and left limping.

The verse to carry

“I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.”

Genesis 32:10

To talk about

  1. 1. Jacob prayed God's own promises back to him. Which of God's promises do you most need to pray back to him right now?

  2. 2. "I won't let you go unless you bless me." What does it look like to hold on to God like that?

  3. 3. Jacob came away from the same night with a new name and a limp. What do you make of a blessing that leaves a mark?
