Genesis 31: The heap of witness
Read Genesis 31:1-55 before you meet.
In a few lines
God told Jacob to return, and he slipped away while Rachel stole her father's teraphim; in Hebrew the same verb, steal, describes both. God warned Laban in a dream, and Jacob said that without "the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac" Laban would have sent him away empty. They parted at a heap of witness with a warning now sometimes used as a blessing: "The LORD watch between me and you."
The verse to carry
“Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.”
Genesis 31:42
To talk about
1. Jacob said, "God didn't allow him to hurt me." Looking back, where has God protected you in ways you didn't see at the time?
2. Rachel carried her father's gods with her. What do people carry from their old life that doesn't belong in the new one?
3. Jacob and Laban made peace with a heap of stones between them. When is a boundary the wisest kind of peace?
