Genesis 27: The stolen blessing
Read Genesis 27:1-46 before you meet.
In a few lines
Rebekah and Jacob deceived blind Isaac, and Jacob took the blessing meant for Esau. Isaac trembled but said, "Yes, he will be blessed." Esau said Jacob was rightly named, for he had supplanted him twice; he wept, and planned to kill his brother, and Rebekah told Jacob to flee to Laban for what she called "a few days".
The verse to carry
“He said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright. See, now he has taken away my blessing.” He said, “Haven’t you reserved a blessing for me?””
Genesis 27:36
To talk about
1. God had said the elder would serve the younger (25:23), yet the blessing came to Jacob by deceit. Why do you think people reach for good things in wrong ways?
2. Esau cried, "Bless me, even me also, my father." What do you make of his grief?
3. Isaac loved Esau and Rebekah loved Jacob. How did that play out in this chapter, and what can we learn from it?
