Genesis 11: A name for ourselves
Read Genesis 11:1-32 before you meet.
In a few lines
The builders of Babel wanted to make a name for themselves and not be scattered; God came down, confused their language, and scattered them. Then the story narrows to one family, Shem's line to Abram, and a wife with no child, and it will be God who makes Abram's name great.
The verse to carry
“Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. From there, the LORD scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.”
Genesis 11:9
To talk about
1. The builders wanted to make a name for themselves. Where are you tempted to build your own name?
2. They built up toward the sky, and God "came down to see" it. What does that say to you about the things we're proud of?
3. The chapter ends with a family on the move and a wife with no child. Where are you waiting on something only God can give?
