Exodus 16: Bread from the sky

Read Exodus 16 before you meet.

In a few lines

The word "Sabbath" first appears in the Bible here, in the wilderness before Sinai, taught by bread that went foul overnight except before the seventh day. "Manna" echoes the people's own question, man hu, "What is it?" (16:15). Jesus said the fathers who ate it died, but "If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever" (John 6:51).

The verse to carry

“When the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they didn’t know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.”

Exodus 16:15

To talk about

  1. 1. A month out of Egypt, Israel wished they had died there, "when we sat by the meat pots" (16:3). When have you looked back on something that was bad for you and remembered only the good parts?

  2. 2. The manna came each morning and wouldn't keep until the next (16:19-21). What would it look like for you to trust God for today, rather than trying to have next month settled?

  3. 3. The LORD gave Israel a day when there was nothing to gather (16:26, 16:29-30). What would it take for you to really stop for a day, and what would be hardest to put down?
