Exodus 13: It is mine
Read Exodus 13 before you meet.
In a few lines
Israel's firstborn belong to the LORD because of the night he struck Egypt's firstborn, and the sons are redeemed, never sacrificed; this is the Hebrew Bible's first use of padah, "redeem". Jesus was presented as a firstborn under this law (Luke 2:22-23). God led his people the long way so they wouldn't see war and turn back, Joseph's bones went with them, and the pillar didn't leave.
The verse to carry
“The LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night:”
Exodus 13:21
To talk about
1. The fathers were to tell their children, "the LORD did for me." What has God done in your life that you'd want someone younger to hear from you?
2. God led Israel the long way round so they wouldn't see war and turn back to Egypt. When has a longer road turned out to be a kindness to you?
3. "It is mine," the LORD says of the firstborn. What would change in your week if you lived as someone who belongs to God?
