Ecclesiastes 6: The wandering of the desire
Read Ecclesiastes 6:1-12 before you meet.
In a few lines
The riches of 6:2 are the riches of 5:19, in the same Hebrew words, but where God gave that man "power to eat of it" (5:19), this one has none. The soul of 6:2-3 is the appetite of 6:7 and the desire of 6:9, one Hebrew word, and the chapter ends on two questions it leaves open (6:12).
The verse to carry
“Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.”
Ecclesiastes 6:9
To talk about
1. The Preacher sees a man who lacks nothing he desires and yet has "no power to eat of it" (6:2). What do you think makes the difference between having good things and being able to enjoy them?
2. "Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire" (6:9). What helps you notice and give thanks for what is already in front of you?
3. The chapter ends with two questions it doesn't answer (6:12). How do you live with a question about your life that you can't answer yet?
