Ecclesiastes 5: Guard your steps
Read Ecclesiastes 5:1-20 before you meet.
In a few lines
In Hebrew, the chapter's first command, "Guard your steps" (5:1), and its "you must fear God" (5:7) are the two commands of the book's last words: "Fear God and keep his commandments" (12:13). And the verb of "God occupies him with the joy of his heart" (5:20) is the one behind "to be afflicted with" (1:13).
The verse to carry
“Don’t be rash with your mouth, and don’t let your heart be hasty to utter anything before God; for God is in heaven, and you on earth. Therefore let your words be few.”
Ecclesiastes 5:2
To talk about
1. "to draw near to listen is better than to give the sacrifice of fools" (5:1). What helps you listen when you come to worship God?
2. "The sleep of a laboring man is sweet" (5:12). What has made rest sweet for you after a day's work?
3. "this is the gift of God" (5:19). What ordinary good thing in your week would you call a gift of God?
