Ecclesiastes 3: A time for every purpose

Read Ecclesiastes 3:1-22 before you meet.

In a few lines

The chapter that opens with "a time for every purpose" (3:1) says the same Hebrew words again when the Preacher sees wickedness in the place of justice: "God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work" (3:17). In the Preacher's words, God's judging has its time too.

The verse to carry

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, yet so that man can’t find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end.”

Ecclesiastes 3:11

To talk about

  1. 1. "For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven" (3:1). Which line of 3:2-8 comes closest to the season you are in, and what helps you in it?

  2. 2. "He has made everything beautiful in its time" (3:11). Where have you seen something become beautiful only in its time, later than you expected?

  3. 3. "every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labor, is the gift of God" (3:13). What everyday gift do you want to notice and enjoy this week?
