Deuteronomy 8: Not by bread only

Read Deuteronomy 8:1-20 before you meet.

In a few lines

The manna came after hunger: the LORD "humbled you, allowed you to be hungry, and fed you with manna" (8:3), to teach that man lives by every word from his mouth, the verse Jesus answered with when he was hungry (Matthew 4:4). And the same two verbs, eat and be full, lead either to blessing the LORD (8:10) or to forgetting him (8:12-14).

The verse to carry

“He humbled you, allowed you to be hungry, and fed you with manna, which you didn’t know, neither did your fathers know, that he might teach you that man does not live by bread only, but man lives by every word that proceeds out of the LORD’s mouth.”

Deuteronomy 8:3

To talk about

  1. 1. Moses told Israel to remember the whole road, the hunger included (8:2-3). What part of your own road would you rather forget, and what might it have taught you?

  2. 2. "You shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God" (8:10). What would it look like for you to thank God this week when things are good, not only when you need him?

  3. 3. "My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth" (8:17). Where are you most tempted to say that in your heart?
