Deuteronomy 5: With us, alive today

Read Deuteronomy 5:1-33 before you meet.

In a few lines

Deuteronomy 5 isn't a copy of Exodus 20. Moses tells the ten words to the next generation, "all of us here alive today" (5:3), and the Sabbath now looks back to Egypt: "remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt" (5:15), so "that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you" (5:14).

The verse to carry

“Oh that there were such a heart in them that they would fear me and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!”

Deuteronomy 5:29

To talk about

  1. 1. Moses told a people, many of whom had been children at the mountain (1:39), that the covenant was made "with us, even us, who are all of us here alive today" (5:3). What changes when you hear God's words as spoken to you today, and not only to people long ago?

  2. 2. "That your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you" (5:14); "You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt" (5:15). Who depends on you for their rest, and how does remembering what God has brought you out of change the way you treat them?

  3. 3. The people said, "we will hear it, and do it" (5:27), and the LORD said, "Oh that there were such a heart in them" (5:29). Where is there a gap this week between what you say to God and where your heart is?
