Deuteronomy 30: Therefore choose life

Read Deuteronomy 30:1-20 before you meet.

In a few lines

One Hebrew verb, shuv, runs seven times through 30:1-10: Israel returns, and the LORD returns and gathers. The heart Moses told Israel to circumcise (10:16), the LORD promises to circumcise (30:6). And "the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart" (30:14) is the word Paul takes up just before "confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord" (Romans 10:9).

The verse to carry

“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore choose life, that you may live, you and your descendants,”

Deuteronomy 30:19

To talk about

  1. 1. After "the blessing and the curse" (30:1), Israel will "return to the LORD your God" (30:2), and the LORD "will return and gather you" (30:3). What helps someone come back to God after a long way off, rather than stay away?

  2. 2. "It is not in heaven… Neither is it beyond the sea… But the word is very near to you" (30:12-14). Where are you tempted to think what God asks is too hard or too far off? What is one thing near to you that you could do this week?

  3. 3. "Therefore choose life" (30:19), "to love the LORD your God, to obey his voice, and to cling to him" (30:20). What does choosing life look like in an ordinary day for you?
