Deuteronomy 29: A heart to know
Read Deuteronomy 29:1-29 before you meet.
In a few lines
Israel had seen every sign in Egypt, and Moses still said, "the LORD has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, and ears to hear, to this day" (29:4). Seeing wonders didn't give a heart to know. And the covenant in Moab was made "with those who stand here with us today… and also with those who are not here with us today" (29:15).
The verse to carry
“The secret things belong to the LORD our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
Deuteronomy 29:29
To talk about
1. "Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did" (29:2), "But the LORD has not given you a heart to know" (29:4). Have you ever seen God at work and still not taken it to heart? What helped, or what might help, the seeing become knowing?
2. "I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart" (29:19). Where is it easiest to tell yourself you'll be fine while holding on to something God has spoken to?
3. "The things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law" (29:29). What is one thing God has made plain that you can do this week, rather than waiting until the hidden things are clear?
