Deuteronomy 26: The first of the fruit
Read Deuteronomy 26:1-19 before you meet.
In a few lines
The words over the basket of first fruits tell Israel's whole story, from "My father was a Syrian ready to perish" to "I have brought the first of the fruit" (26:5-10), and the one speaking says "us" of Egypt. And the statutes close with a declaration made both ways: Israel says the LORD is its God, and the LORD says Israel is his own people (26:17-18).
The verse to carry
“You shall rejoice in all the good which the LORD your God has given to you, and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the foreigner who is among you.”
Deuteronomy 26:11
To talk about
1. The one bringing the basket told Israel's story from Egypt as "us" (26:6-9). What part of God's story with his people do you tell as your own, and why?
2. The first of the fruit went to the LORD, with the words "which you, the LORD, have given me" (26:10). What would it look like for you to give God something first this month, not last?
3. "You have declared today that the LORD is your God" (26:17). If you said that out loud today, what in your week would it change?
