Deuteronomy 15: Open your hand

Read Deuteronomy 15:1-23 before you meet.

In a few lines

The seventh year was "the LORD’s release" (15:2). The same law that says "the poor will never cease out of the land" makes it the reason to "surely open your hand" (15:11), and a freed servant was not to go out empty, because "you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you" (15:15).

The verse to carry

“For the poor will never cease out of the land. Therefore I command you to surely open your hand to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor, in your land.”

Deuteronomy 15:11

To talk about

  1. 1. "You shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother; but you shall surely open your hand to him" (15:7-8). When have you felt your hand close toward someone in need? What helped it open, or what would?

  2. 2. "You shall surely give, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him" (15:10). Moses cares about the heart behind the gift, not only the gift. What makes giving hard for you, and what makes it glad?

  3. 3. "You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you. Therefore I command you this thing today" (15:15). What has God set you free from, and how could remembering it change the way you treat someone who owes you or depends on you?
