Deuteronomy 14: Children of the LORD your God

Read Deuteronomy 14:1-29 before you meet.

In a few lines

In Deuteronomy the tithe was a meal: the family ate it before the LORD, "that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always" (14:23), bought with money if the way was far, and the Levite wasn't forsaken (14:26-27). Every third year it stayed in the towns for the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow (14:28-29).

The verse to carry

“You shall eat before the LORD your God, in the place which he chooses to cause his name to dwell, the tithe of your grain, of your new wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock; that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always.”

Deuteronomy 14:23

To talk about

  1. 1. "You are the children of the LORD your God" (14:1) comes before the command about the dead. How does knowing whose you are shape the way you face loss?

  2. 2. The tithe was eaten with rejoicing, "that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always" (14:23). What has a shared meal ever taught you about God?

  3. 3. Every third year the tithe was laid up in the towns so the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow could "eat and be satisfied" (14:29). Who in your town would that tithe have fed, and what could your group do for them?
