2 Samuel 9: At the king's table
Read 2 Samuel 9:1-13 before you meet.
In a few lines
In 1 Samuel 20, David's place at Saul's table was empty (1 Samuel 20:27). In 2 Samuel 9, Jonathan's lame son "ate continually at the king’s table" (9:13), because David asked for anyone left of Saul's house, to show him kindness "for Jonathan’s sake" (9:1).
The verse to carry
“David said to him, “Don’t be afraid, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your father. You will eat bread at my table continually.””
2 Samuel 9:7
To talk about
1. David went looking for someone to be kind to "for Jonathan’s sake" (9:1). Whose kindness to you could you pass on this week to someone close to them?
2. Mephibosheth answered David's kindness with "What is your servant, that you should look at such a dead dog as I am?" (9:8). What makes it hard for you to accept kindness you know you haven't earned?
3. The king's table had a place for a man who was "lame in both his feet" (9:13). Who could you make room for at your table, or in your group?
