2 Samuel 23: The last words of David

Read 2 Samuel 23:1-39 before you meet.

In a few lines

David's last words call him "the anointed of the God of Jacob" and, for the only time in 2 Samuel, call the LORD's promise to him a covenant: "an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure" (23:5). Then the list of his mighty men gives the victory to the LORD and ends on one name: Uriah the Hittite (23:39).

The verse to carry

“Isn’t my house so with God? Yet he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure, for it is all my salvation and all my desire. Won’t he make it grow?”

2 Samuel 23:5

To talk about

  1. 1. David's last words are about God's Spirit, a king who rules in the fear of God, and God's covenant (23:2-5), not about his own victories. If you had to choose your last words today, what would you want them to be about?

  2. 2. "Isn’t my house so with God? Yet he has made with me an everlasting covenant" (23:5). Where do you lean on God's promise when your own life or family doesn't measure up?

  3. 3. David wouldn't drink what his men had risked their lives to bring, and poured it out to the LORD (23:16-17). How do you honour what others have given for you at a cost?
