2 Samuel 21: The LORD's oath
Read 2 Samuel 21:1-22 before you meet.
In a few lines
"After that, God answered prayer for the land" (21:14) comes after the bones of Saul and Jonathan were buried in the tomb of Kish, not straight after the seven died. And in Hebrew that verb, atar, comes only twice in 2 Samuel: here, and in the book's last verse, "So the LORD was entreated for the land" (24:25).
The verse to carry
“But the king spared Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.”
2 Samuel 21:7
To talk about
1. The famine lasted "for three years, year after year," and "David sought the face of the LORD" (21:1). What keeps you from bringing a long, hard thing to God?
2. David kept his oath to Jonathan by sparing Jonathan's son (21:7), years after Jonathan had died. Is there a promise you've made that has become harder or costlier to keep? What would keeping it look like now?
3. Rizpah kept watch on the rock (21:10), and David's men stepped in when he grew faint (21:15-17). Who near you needs someone to stay with them or step in for them right now, and what could you do?
