2 Samuel 19: Bringing the king back

Read 2 Samuel 19:1-43 before you meet.

In a few lines

Three men "came down" to meet the returning king (19:16, 19:24, 19:31): Shimei asked the king not to hold his wrong against him, Mephibosheth said he had no right left to ask (19:28), and Barzillai asked only to go home (19:37). And the king's "You will not die" to Shimei (19:23) is what Nathan had said to David (12:13).

The verse to carry

“Mephibosheth said to the king, “Yes, let him take all, because my lord the king has come in peace to his own house.””

2 Samuel 19:30

To talk about

  1. 1. Joab told the grieving king, "arise, go out and speak to comfort your servants" (19:7), and the king got up and sat in the gate (19:8). When have someone's hard words helped you face the people who were counting on you?

  2. 2. Shimei came down to meet the man he had cursed and said, "your servant knows that I have sinned" (19:20). Is there someone you need to go and meet like that? What makes it hard?

  3. 3. Barzillai gave to the king when he was in need (19:32) and then asked, "Why should the king repay me with such a reward?" (19:36). Who has been a Barzillai to you, and how could you thank them this week?
