2 Samuel 18: My son, my son

Read 2 Samuel 18:1-33 before you meet.

In a few lines

Before the battle and after it, David speaks of Absalom as "the young man" (18:5, 18:29, 18:32). When the news comes, he calls him my son, five times: "My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died instead of you" (18:33).

The verse to carry

“The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate and wept. As he went, he said, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!””

2 Samuel 18:33

To talk about

  1. 1. The people told David, "you are worth ten thousand of us" (18:3), and he answered, "I will do what seems best to you" (18:4). When have the people around you been right to hold you back from something you meant to do? Was it hard to listen?

  2. 2. The man wouldn't touch Absalom even for "a thousand pieces of silver", because he had heard the king's command (18:12). What helps you keep to what is right when someone offers you a reason not to?

  3. 3. David grieved for a son who had risen against him (18:33). How can your group stand with someone whose grief is tangled up with a broken relationship?
