2 Samuel 10: Kindness refused

Read 2 Samuel 10:1-19 before you meet.

In a few lines

Joab's words before the battle, "may the LORD do what seems good to him" (10:12), are in Hebrew the same four words Eli said when he heard the LORD's judgment on his house (1 Samuel 3:18), and David says nearly the same of himself as he flees Absalom (15:26).

The verse to carry

“Be courageous, and let’s be strong for our people and for the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what seems good to him.”

2 Samuel 10:12

To talk about

  1. 1. David meant kindness, and the princes read it as spying (10:2-3). When has something kind you did been misread, and what did you do next?

  2. 2. David "sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed", and gave them time before they came home (10:5). Who near you needs someone to go out to them, and what would giving them time look like?

  3. 3. Joab made his plan, promised his brother help, and then said, "may the LORD do what seems good to him" (10:12). Where are you finding it hard to do your part and leave the outcome with God?
