2 Samuel 1: How the mighty have fallen

Read 2 Samuel 1:1-27 before you meet.

In a few lines

David's question, "Why were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?" (1:14), uses the words he had spoken over the sleeping Saul: "Don’t destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against the LORD’s anointed" (1 Samuel 26:9). And the lament's refrain, "How the mighty have fallen!" (1:19), comes three times in a chapter that, in Hebrew, says fall seven times.

The verse to carry

“Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives. In their death, they were not divided. They were swifter than eagles. They were stronger than lions.”

2 Samuel 1:23

To talk about

  1. 1. Saul had come out to seek David's life (1 Samuel 23:15), and still David wept for him (1:12). How do you grieve someone when your history with them was hard?

  2. 2. David said, "Don’t tell it in Gath" (1:20). When someone falls, what helps you keep their fall from becoming news?

  3. 3. In his lament David remembers Jonathan by name (1:25-26). Who is someone you want to honor while they can still hear it?
