2 Kings 8: A lamp for his children

Read 2 Kings 8:1-29 before you meet.

In a few lines

Elisha "restored to life" the Shunammite's son (8:1), and Benhadad asks, "Will I recover from this sickness?" (8:8): in Hebrew both are one verb, used ten times in the chapter's first fourteen verses. And the "lamp" the LORD promised for David's children (8:19) is a word the Hebrew Bible uses only four times, each time of a lamp for David.

The verse to carry

“However, the LORD would not destroy Judah, for David his servant’s sake, as he promised him to give to him a lamp for his children always.”

2 Kings 8:19

To talk about

  1. 1. The Shunammite left her house and land for seven years at the man of God's word (8:1-2), then went to the king to ask for them back (8:3). What have you had to leave, and what did it take to go back and ask?

  2. 2. Elisha wept over what he knew was coming (8:11-12). What do you see coming for people you love that you grieve over, and what do you do with that grief?

  3. 3. Jehoram "did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight" (8:18), and yet "the LORD would not destroy Judah, for David his servant’s sake" (8:19). How does it change the way you see yourself to know that God keeps his promises through people who fail?
