2 Kings 24: As the LORD had said

Read 2 Kings 24:1-20 before you meet.

In a few lines

The king of Babylon carried Jerusalem away, but the chapter says whose word it was: the bands came "according to the LORD’s word" (24:2), and the treasures went "as the LORD had said" (24:13), the word Isaiah gave Hezekiah (20:17). And Matthew counts Jesus' line by the exile to Babylon: "from the carrying away to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations" (Matthew 1:17).

The verse to carry

“He carried out from there all the treasures of the LORD’s house and the treasures of the king’s house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the LORD’s temple, as the LORD had said.”

2 Kings 24:13

To talk about

  1. 1. The treasures were carried off "as the LORD had said" (24:13), a word given to Hezekiah before Manasseh's long reign (20:17, 21:1). How does it change the way you hear God's promises and warnings, knowing he keeps his word even when it takes a long time?

  2. 2. The treasures, the king, the princes, the mighty men and the craftsmen were all carried away, and "No one remained except the poorest people of the land" (24:13-15). If the things you lean on most were taken away, what would you still have?

  3. 3. Manasseh had died years before (21:18), yet the chapter names "the innocent blood that he shed" (24:4). What do you make of that?
