2 Kings 15: So it came to pass

Read 2 Kings 15:1-38 before you meet.

In a few lines

2 Kings 15 calls one king of Judah both Azariah and Uzziah, and Matthew's genealogy of Jesus uses Uzziah: "Uzziah became the father of Jotham" (Matthew 1:9). Of the five kings of Israel whose reigns it tells, four are killed by the man who reigns after them, the LORD's word to Jehu is kept, "So it came to pass" (15:12), and the king of Assyria first comes into Kings.

The verse to carry

“This was the LORD’s word which he spoke to Jehu, saying, “Your sons to the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” So it came to pass.”

2 Kings 15:12

To talk about

  1. 1. Azariah lived in a separate house while "Jotham, the king’s son, was over the household, judging the people of the land" (15:5). When have you had to step back and let someone else carry what you used to carry, and how did you handle it?

  2. 2. Menahem gave a thousand talents of silver "that his hand might be with him to confirm the kingdom in his hand" (15:19). What do people pay, in money or in other ways, to make their own place feel secure? What do you pay?

  3. 3. "This was the LORD’s word which he spoke to Jehu… So it came to pass" (15:12). The word was spoken to Jehu and kept in the days of his great-great-grandson. What does it mean to you that God's word still stands after that long, and is there a word of his you are waiting to see?
