2 Kings 14: No helper for Israel

Read 2 Kings 14:1-29 before you meet.

In a few lines

Jeroboam restored Israel's border "according to the LORD, the God of Israel’s word, which he spoke by his servant Jonah the son of Amittai" (14:25), the Jonah Jesus called "Jonah the prophet" (Matthew 12:39). And the chapter says why the LORD saved Israel under a king who did evil: "the LORD saw the affliction of Israel", and "there was no helper for Israel" (14:26).

The verse to carry

“For the LORD saw the affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter for all, slave and free; and there was no helper for Israel. The LORD didn’t say that he would blot out the name of Israel from under the sky; but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.”

2 Kings 14:26-27

To talk about

  1. 1. "Enjoy the glory of it, and stay at home" (14:10). When has a win made you want to push further than you should have, and what would staying at home have looked like?

  2. 2. Amaziah punished the men who killed his father, but not their children, because the law said "every man shall die for his own sin" (14:6). Where are you tempted to hold someone's family or friends against them for what one person did?

  3. 3. "The LORD saw the affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter for all… and there was no helper for Israel" (14:26). Where does it feel like there's no helper for you or someone you love right now, and what changes if the LORD sees it?
